As I sit down to write this post, I realize with a shock that I've not done any work in my studio since the Atalaya Festival at the end of September! October brought Hurricane Matthew, a visit from my family evacuating Charleston SC only to have Matthew follow them to Cary, and training for and working early voting. Felting and painting had to take a back seat!
This funky statement piece is one of my previous nuno felted shawls... I'm happy to say that it was sold at Atalaya :-)
This large shawl features merino wool fiber, silk fiber, silk fabric, nylon yarn and my own hand spun silk yarn, felted onto a base of silk gauze. I started with all white materials and painted the finished shawl with blue and grey dyes after felting. If you know my work, you know that I love dangly things - and there's no shortage of fabric, wool and yarn dreads hanging off this piece!
Here's a closeup of some of the fun textures in this shawl, caused by uneven shrinkage of the fibers and fabrics during the felting process ~
Some of the other scarves and shawls I'll have at the show ~
Hope to see you at St. Paul's this Saturday- come support your local artists and outreach ministries!
