Some women drool over shoes, others drool over handbags or jewelry. Me? All it takes to get my heart a-flutter is a bit of exciting texture... the kind that is created when silk and wool fibers unite during nuno felting. Unpredictable and organic, these textures transform a one-dimensional piece of silk into a new, multi-layered piece of fiber art.
The loose wool, laid out on the silk scarf, looks rather bland to begin with. On top of the wool I usually lay strands of embellishing yarn... sometimes silk, sometimes wool or even synthetic yarn... or all of the above... anything to create yet a different texture on top of the wool roving.
These scarves started out measuring 21 x 80, but are now all approximately 15 x 60, due to the wool shrinking and taking everything else along with it.
And here are closeups of the textures that I find so fascinating ~ click the images for a closer look!
