Well I have rubbed, rolled, smacked and thrown my 2 silk/wool nuno felted scarves, the beginnings of which you can see here. How very different they look now! All this agitation makes the wool shrink as it felts (interlocks fibers) to the silk and to itself. It carries the silk along with it, causing the most delightful ruching in the silk. I love how the wool colors blended together and how the yarns became wavy. There is subtle shimmer where pearlescent fibers have intermingled with the wool.
With the red scarf I was a bit too vigorous in the fulling (shrinking) phase and the wool shrank way more than I had intended... maybe by 60%! However it did cause lots of uneven ruffles in the silk, which I think are pretty cool. I want to more of this extreme shrinkage... but starting with a much bigger piece os silk so the scarf isn't so small when all is done!
When the scarf is worn, the ruffled edge turns over like a collar, creating another sheer layer. I love the contrast of the sheer silk with the textured wool.
I'm still at the bottom of the learning curve with this technique... but I love it and am looking forward to doing lots more!
