Happy New Year to all reading this! Can 2014 already be more than a week old? My best wishes for the new year, and commiserations to all those getting blasted by the Arctic weather in the north! The year starts with a pair of commissioned paintings. Which is a good segue between a rather long Holiday break and diving full steam into scarf-painting in preparation for my various shows.
A good friend of mine - (we've known each other since we were 12) who had only seen my paintings on the internet, saw my semi-abstract batik floral Peony in Joy series on my blog and ordered two similar paintings, but with a different palette of pink, blue and green.
Just as in the Peony in Joy paintings, I started with a spiral of the three colors and built the flower shapes out of it. I worked on both paintings at the same time, so there are two paintings on the piece of silk in photos below.
Ending: Everything is now covered with wax and the wax is cracked, ready for the over-dyeing that will create the characteristic batik crackle effect. It's difficult to see what I really have under all that wax... all will be revealed when it is removed in the final step... coming up in the next post!
