Continuing my series of batik florals depicting a multicolored (and imaginary) peony flower... you can follow the creation of the previous ones in this post and the ones before it. I love spirals, so I started with an underpainting of a spiral of yellow, pink and purple. The spiral remains pretty obvious until the last step, where it more or less disappears into the image of the flower.
Here is the progression of the painting, each photo showing a new layer of dye and wax.
In the last photo above, the painting is covered in wax, which makes it look darker than it really is. The final step is to crack the wax and paint dye into the cracks, to create the characteristic organic look of batik.
Below is the finished painting, with cracking done and wax removed.
