About Deborah Younglao

DEBORAH YOUNGLAO is a mostly self-taught artist.  Her background is a diverse one:  in addition to her native Caribbean island of Trinidad, Deborah has lived in Barbados, Ireland, Canada and 4 states in the US, including her current home of North Carolina.

An accomplished silk painter for many years - she achieved Silk Painters International Master Silk Painter status in 2010 - Deborah has transitioned to abstract acrylic painting and loves watching colors, shapes and lines come to life on her canvas.

I have always been fascinated by the movement of colors across a surface, forming new colors and shapes as they go. After decades of watching this drama unfold with liquid dyes painted onto silk, about a year ago I transitioned to pouring acrylics onto canvas. This evolution seemed quite natural - I merely exchanged color movement in one fluid medium to another!

I love that pouring paints is such an interactive process - it’s a dance between the artist and the liquid colors as I tilt the canvas and make the colors spread. I’m excited by the developing spontaneous organic textures and shapes that take on a life of their own. Fingers, a palette knife, and air blown onto the wet paint help me nudge the painting in the direction I want it to go, but I have to be open to letting the painting speak for itself. The result is a dynamic creation that can never be reproduced, so that each piece is truly one-of-a-kind.

I use these same techniques to create hand painted jewelry from acrylic skins. Skins are formed when the painting is created on a non-stick surface. When the paint is dry, it has a plastic consistency and can be peeled off the surface!

I then look for small areas with interesting colors and compositions. Some are completely abstract; others look like tiny landscapes, seascapes or floral. These miniature works of art are glued to a glass cabochon, then glued into a metal setting.

My inspiration is simple - the need to create. To create with color. To create patterns reminiscent of Mother Nature. The need to experiment with different techniques and materials.
