Almost Time for Atalaya Festival, Sept 23-25

The last weekend in September sees thousands of art enthusiasts flock to Huntington Beach State Park in Murrell's Inlet SC, for the Atalaya Arts & Crafts Festival. The show of over 100 artists is held in the beautiful courtyard of Atalaya Castle, and in the historic building itself. Local Southern 'Low Country' food and entertainment complete the picture.

Show Hours are -
Friday Sept. 23: 12 - 6 p.m.
Saturday Sept. 24: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Sunday Sept. 25:10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

I'll be inside the Castle in one of the southeast facing rooms (beach side), R26B.

I've been working mostly on wet felted and nuno felted scarves and shawls - here are some of my new creations.

My favorite! The base merino wool of this shawl is such a beautiful periwinkle blue. I embellished it with purple, pink and burgundy silk fabric, silk fibers and different types of yarn. Although there's a lot going on in this piece, it's very thin, light and flexible.

Sunset colors in this asymmetrical piece. There are holes at one end and 'dreads' at the other end for threading through the holes and tying. Merino wool and wool yarn.

Another asymmetrical collar scarf with holes and dreads for tying. Merino wool and silk fibers.

This frothy creation has a base of super sheer silk organza, hand painted in pale burgundy. Stylized wool and silk flowers and leaves snake their way along its length.

Neutral colors in this one. Blue-grey and white merino leaves, enhanced with silk and champagne colored yak fibers, are felted onto silk chiffon.

As usual. felting creates very interesting and organic textures!

In addition to the festival, if you're a birder, Huntington Beach State Park is home to multitudes of birds. You may treated to sights like this as you cross the lagoon on the way to the Castle!
