Silk Painting Birthday Party

Last Saturday I had six 12 - 13 year olds over for a silk painting birthday party! Julia, our neighbor's daughter, had just turned 12 and she requested a silk painting class with Ms. Deborah for herself and 5 of her friends instead of a 'regular' birthday party - what an honor! It was a 2 hour class and they really got into it.

The finished project would be a silk sun catcher - silk stretched over a metal hoop that you paint straight on to and is ready to display in a window. We used Dye-na-Flow heat set silk paints which are easily set with a hot iron. Colored wax crayons took the place of the usual colorless resist. When the crayon is ironed, the wax melts and forms a pretty good resist, and the colored lines are fun for kids.

They were so enthusiastic about what was a new medium for them - had fun and created some beautiful work!
