For the past few days I've been in Charleston SC , helping cousins move into their new home. Taking a break to go through some old computer files, I found these 2 paintings I did many years ago. We had some huge butterfly bushes in our yard that the swallowtails just loved. I was amazed at how close they would let me get to observe them! The sun was shining through their wings, making them transparent in places.
These paintings are done on jacquard silk, which has a textured pattern woven into it. When it's dyed the leafy pattern really shows up, and changes as you view the painting in different lights - making it almost iridescent and perfect for these butterflies!
