A slight mishap

I guess things were just going too well....... After I finish a painting, it has to be steamed to set the dyes. Basically the silk is rolled up in newsprint paper, placed in a large canning pot and steamed for a couple of hours. For the sake of efficiency, I usually steam more than one at a time, especially with these small paintings. After steaming, the excess dye is rinsed out.

Well yesterday I steamed 2 pieces in the usual fashion, but when I rinsed them, practially all the dye on both of them high-tailed it down the sink! I haven't a clue why. Some evil witch flying around overhead? I'm just glad they were only small pieces and not some major work! So anyway I'm going to paint something similar tomorrow using the same dyes and paying close attention and see if it happens again - hopefully I can solve the mystery.....
